Powerful what? the Powerful vibe is the best iPod Shuffle replacement you’ve probably never heard of. Screenless, refreshingly analog, but with hi-tech touches, this portable extension of your Spotify Premium account is your new best friend.

What is the powerful vibration?

First of all take your mind out of the gutter, the Mighty Vibe is fun for your ears, nothing else. This is Mighty’s second-generation portable Spotify Premium player. This little rubberized square has navigation buttons on its face, a clip on the back, a headphone jack on the top and no display. If you want to connect to the device, you will need to use the Mighty app on your phone.

But just because it looks analog doesn’t mean it’s not high tech. There may be a 3.5mm jack on the top of the device – and you can use it for headphones – but Might Vibe is Bluetooth enabled. So grab your favorite wireless headphones, connect them to the app and you can enjoy your music without worrying about cables.

The Mighty Vibe is also available in three colors, black, blue and red.

How to use it ?

First of all, if you don’t have a Spotify Premium account, this is not the device for you. The Mighty Vibe gets all of its content from your Spotify playlists and you can only download them for offline playback if you pay for a Premium account.

That said, Spotify would be wise to include the Mighty Vibe with every paid Premium subscription, that’s how perfect the device is. You sync your playlists in the app, including your automatically refreshed mixes (Mighty Vibe will connect over Wi-Fi every day to download updates), hit the playlist select button and hit play . In a technological landscape where nothing is single-use, Mighty Vibe is refreshingly simple.

Is it worth it?

This simplicity makes it a pleasure to use, especially when training. It’s a simple thing to find the buttons to increase or decrease the volume, play or pause your music, or skip tracks.

The limited interface does have an occasional drawback, however. Selecting an exact song can take a bit of work, as you have to click on your playlist to find it. If you have a lot of playlists, it can be a bit of a hassle to switch between them (especially since the robotic voice announcing each one makes you cringe). And if you need to manage your data on the go, you’ll need your phone and a Wi-Fi network. But these things are fleeting and don’t detract from the delightfully disconnected experience.

At around $ 80 (Amazon usually has it for less), it’s a leap of faith. But when you get five hours of uninterrupted music on the go, with no interruptions to calls or notifications, the price doesn’t seem so bad. Especially if you are going out for a long run (Mighty Vibe is water and drop resistant) it could be the difference between training frustration and Zen training.

Should I get it?

If you’re looking to minimize the distractions and gear you take with you on the go, and you have a Spotify Premium account, there’s little reason not to get one. Who would have thought that after years of ensuring that we were never disconnected, we would be yearning for the days of single-use technology, but here we are. The Mighty Vibe is like the iPod evolved: a Bluetooth-enabled portable music player that lets you disconnect your tracks online. Highly recommended.
