Take a trip down memory lane as Shazam turns 20! The charm of the song recognition app has played a vital role in enabling local and up-and-coming artists to thrive. So now he’s inviting fans to reminisce about the start of Shazam with a curated playlist exclusively on Apple Music.
Shazam’s 2002 launch in the UK enabled it to identify songs using mobile devices. Users at the time could identify songs by dialing “2580” on their phone and holding it while the music played. Then they received an SMS message after telling them the title of the song and the name of the artist.
Shazam’s notable breakthroughs and firsts with talent on a global scale make up its two-decade history, and its charts have also become a barometer for unexpected cultural moments. For example, the prominence of Kate Bush’s 1985 song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” in “Stranger Things” resulted in an all-time high for the singer’s Shazam count, and the song held the top spot on the Shazam Global Top 200 for ten days.
Nigerian artist CKay flourished when his 2021 song “Love Nwantiti (Remix)” became the second song to top 1 million Shazams in a week. In 2021, Shazam also played a vital role in helping to identify breaking as Masked Wolf whose song “Astronaut In The Ocean” was the most Shazamed track in the world that year.

Apple Music’s special playlist features hits that reflect music fans around the world over the past two decades, like the first track to hit 10 million Shazams – “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra – and the most Shazamed song of all time with 41 million Shazams, Tones and I’s “Dance Monkey”. check it out here!
