Swedish pianist, composer and conductor Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) completed his Piano Concerto No. 2 on his 36th birthday in 1907. As one of Sweden’s greatest pianists, he had performed his Piano Concerto No. 1 for years but had grown tired of it. , wrote the 2nd which is a much more mature work and still very popular in Sweden. But he didn’t perform the 2nd Concerto as much because he leaned more towards conducting for the rest of his life. With its intriguing clashes between piano and orchestra (often playing in different keys), Wilhelm Stenhammar’s inventive yet immensely listenable Piano Concerto #2 is today’s noon-2pm masterpiece.
