Between the Civil War and World War I, George Chadwick had been America’s most important composer; and from 1897 until his death in 1931 he was the transforming director of the New England Conservatory in Boston. Before that, in 1893, he wrote in his memoirs that “I have a new symphony in F major well underway” while living with his family on Martha’s Vineyard. He finished it in time to enter it in the second annual composition competition of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, led by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. Chadwick’s symphony won first prize and he was informed by Dvorak himself. Chadwick’s award-winning Symphony No. 3 is today’s noon masterpiece at 2:00 p.m.
