Igor Stravinsky playing cards

Featuring dancers dressed as playing cards, Igor Stravinsky’s 1937 ballet “Playing Cards” is often interpreted as a satirical allegory of rising European political unrest in the 1930s. The confident Joker simply wins a hand declaring himself superior to the other cards in play. But his arrogance won’t save him in the end and he is eventually overpowered. A commission from choreographer George Balanchine, “Card Game – A Ballet in Three Deals” (as Stravinsky aptly called each act) cites famous works by earlier composers, modified in his neo-classical fashion, including his transformed version of the theme “Fate”. which opens Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and is used here between the acts as “bargain” music. Stravinsky’s “card game” is today’s noon masterpiece at 2:00 p.m.
