At 17, a student at the Paris Conservatory, George Bizet composed a symphony which he quickly forgot and which he never mentioned in any of his notebooks or letters. Eighty years later – sixty years after his death – Bizet’s first symphony had its premiere in 1935 and caused a sensation. It was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of youth and the famous choreographer George Balanchine even choreographed it in a ballet in 1947. George Bizet’s First Symphony in C is today the masterpiece of noon to 2 p.m.
