Robbie Williams was shocked by his “awkward” time as a DJ in Ibiza.
The 48-year-old pop star arrived in the Spanish city in August to play his first electronic music gig and as he hoped to emulate the success of Happy Mondays star Bez, but ended up Googling what to say while he was live on stage. .
He said: “So I showed up at my first electronic dance music gig, in Ibiza, at a place called 528. I thought what was going to happen when I did this dance project was I was going to be an audience member, but on stage I just thought I was going to be the Bez of this project, hang out, vibe, you know What actually happened when I got to the first gig was 2,000 people faced the stage and just stared at me, almost no movement and it was so awkward, so awkward.”
I googled, ‘What do garage MCs say?’ while I’m on stage because I don’t know what to do! I’m like, ‘Inside, this one’s for the ladies. Wait for the fall! I didn’t know what I was doing so I just repeated the 10 most important things over and over – ‘Inside!'”
The ‘Angels’ hitmaker went on to add that while he was initially confident about the gig, he was surprised when he realized he would be performing in a space that looked like a ‘dressing room’.
Speaking on the ‘Changes’ podcast, he told host Annie Mac: “I couldn’t believe how awkward it was! It was a shock, a shock. I was like ‘Yeah, yeah, I’ll do it! Then they take you to a back room and they say, “This is where you will play!” I’m like, ‘What? It’s a locker room! I get it – whoever you are, that’s where you start. am not leaving the house for a few months to go do this for it to cost me money!”
